Secretary of Treasury nominee Timothy Geithner failed to pay self-employment taxes for money he earned while working for IMF from 2001 to 2003, according to materials released by the Senate Finance committee. In 2006, the IRS notified him that he owed $14,847 in self-employment taxes and $2,383 in interest from 2003 and 2004, which he paid after an audit. The IRS waived penalties for those tax years.

In 2006, the IRS assessed Geithner self-employment tax and interest for failure to pay taxes on income from the IMF during the 2003 - 2004 tax years in the amount of $14,847 in tax and $2,383 in interest.

Timothy Geithner's father, Peter F. Geithner, is the director of the Asia program at the Ford Foundation in New York. During the early 1980s, Peter Geithner oversaw the Ford Foundation’s microfinance programs in Indonesia being developed by Ann Dunham-Soetoro, mother of President-elect Barack Obama, and they met in person at least once.
